Narrator Kevin Collins is eminently likable as Ethan Wate, a teenager trying to navigate the loss of his mom and emotional distance of his dad, the intriguing new girl at school, and the increasingly mysterious goings-on in his small Southern town. Even better, Collins is just as convincing as the town's cast of characters, including love interest Lena, caretaker Amma, best friend Link, high-school mean girls, and the imposing ladies of the DAR. Occasional sound effects, which are used mainly to distinguish dream sequences or flashbacks, distract from the narrative instead of enhancing it. But listeners will be charmed by the setting and story elements--call it Southern gothic meets contemporary witchcraft--and by Collins's skill with all of it. Collins has his work cut out for him with this book, which is half southern gothic and half YA fantasy, but he expertly delivers, from beginning to end. Ethan Wate and Lena Duchannes find themselves inexplicably drawn together despite their differences, particularly the fact that he is a mortal and she is a Caster. The story is told from Ethan's point of view, and Collins reads his narration and thoughts in a straightforward tone. (Lena is voiced by Bianco.) All of the dialogue is read with a southern accent, slight for Lena and Ethan, and a deeper drawl for Lena's uncle Macon and other residents of Gatlin, South Carolina. Sound effects are interspersed throughout the audio and mainly used to highlight the historical and supernatural scenes, including the crackling fire, wind, and rain that is associated with Lena's casting. The final disc includes an interview with the authors as well as a PDF file of the Duchannes, Wate, and Ravenwood family trees. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
